Libby wrote this letter today and sent it to Def Jam Records (Logic's label) asking for permission for us to use the song for educational purposes.
Parody Of Genre Videos
In this parody video they play on the fact that the original song and music video refers to drugs, but they change 'CoCo' to coca cola and the petrol station called Sunoco. They change what is a song all about drugs, obsessions and how cheap they're getting it, into a video located at a gas station. They talk about being broke and not being able to buy chocolate which replicate the drugs as they pick up many different types.
In this parody music video Jimmy Fallon plays on Will Smiths opening music video to the fresh prince of Bel Air. He create his journey to the stage where he hosts his show but does it in the style and similar lyrics and story line as Will Smith does. He even mocks the costume and setting.
This parody video mocks the lyrics Drake raps as he delivers his message of how hard his life has been and to see the journey of where he started to where he is now. The people featuring in this parody music video mock the costumes of everyone in Drake's video even down to drawing on facial hair and wearing fake teeth and wigs.
Name Decision
As a group we have decided on a name for our artist. Issak suggested ISO and asked all kinds of different people what genre of music it made them think of. A large majority said it sounded like a rapper and as a result we made the decision that ISO should be our artists name. Issak quickly drew up text samples on Photoshop for us to see if it decide if it looked as good in text which are below:
Libby created more text samples with just iso so we can asses which one suits our genre and looks best. Once we have decided this I will make the headers for Twitter and Facebook.

Reflection On Filming
Our first filming session was not productive this is largely due to lack of planning. One of the issues was the weather, which cannot be helped but there are other factors that we can cut out to make our filming go more smoothly. I have listed below what we will do to make our next filming more effective.
- We will bring two cameras and tripods when we next go out to film to get different angles
- We will charge the cameras a few hours before going out to film
- Before filming we'll look at the storyboard an make a list of the shots we need to get

Kendrick first gained notoriety with the release of Section 80 which received huge critical acclaim. He then went onto release Good Kid, m.A.A.d city which was one of the biggest hip hip albums of the decade and has already been dubbed a classic album by many reviewers. With singles like Swimming Pools (Drank) Kendrick managed to reach a global audience to people who don't even particularly like hip hop music but liked the singles.
Logic:
Logic is an American rapper born in Maryland he gained a lot fans through the internet and is a part of the RattPack group. He is signed to VisionaryMusicGroup and DefJamRecordings. They combined releasing mixtapes such as Young Kingz to satisfy fans of Grime and releasing more pop, hip hop inspired singles such as Freak Of The Week.Lip Sync Practice
We filmed Issak lip syncing a segment of our chosen song, Buried Alive by Logic. The overall result was impressive and confirmed that the lip syncing won't be an issue if we dedicate enough time and effort to making it in time. There are a few lines that are out sync but given the small amount time it was filmed and edited in this is not a concern.

Avaliability Timetable
Libby created a timetable of all our free periods combined. This will be useful so we can fairly share out responsibility. We also now have a WhatsApp group so we can constantly share ideas.
Final Decision
After pitching our songs in our group we narrowed it down to two
songs. One that I had suggested, Children Of The Wild, and Issak's choice,
Burried Alive, we then played both songs to our class. After the song had
finished we asked them what they imagined the music video for both songs would
look like. What people said was in keeping with our ideas which confirmed that
our ideas suited the song.
On later research we found out that
Children Of The Wild had an official music video, which was quite similar to my
idea. So with this and Issak's creative idea for his music video, we decided as
a group that 'Buried Alive' by Logic would be the best song for us to
make our music video for.
A link to the song we decided to make is
below:
Production Diary
I've kept a production diary in order to chronologically
track all of our planning for our final music video.
21st Sep: Today we got into our groups and each pitched 3
song ideas with a rough plan as to what we could do for the music video
attached. We discussed what we liked and disliked about some of the ideas but
we came to a final conclusion that we liked Buried Alive - Logic, and Children
Of The Wild - Steve Angello as our final 2 songs to pitch to the class for
their feedback.
22nd Sep: In this meeting we pitched our 2 song/ music video
ideas to the class, we just showed them the lyrics whilst the audio of the song
played so that we could see how they interpreted the song compared to us. They
came up with some good and bad points which made us rethink our song
suggestions. The biggest problem they thought we would face would be the speed
of the rap at certain points throughout the song but we decided that we could
work through this problem and solve it so we decided to use Logic's Buried
Alive as our final suggestion.
23rd Sep: Today I created an availability table so that we
could easily see when we had free's together where we could use this as group
meetings or filming. I also highlighted when we had media lessons so that we
are able to plan ahead and use our time productively. I also made a group chat
on Whatsapp so that we're able to communicate easily.
24th Sep: Today I looked at websites and CD covers from the
rap genre in order to gain an understanding of how we could design and display
ours. James also did some research on Kendrick Lamar's website as well as Logic
and I did some additional research on 50 Cent. Issak did a practice lip syncing
task for our music video so that we had an idea on the
difficulty of the speed. Here is his practice;
25th Sep: Today I decided to do some artist research on
Logic as I don't usually listen to any music in the Rap genre and I wanted to
know some more about him. I felt this would help as when we want to create an
identity/ personality for our artist I will be able to help and input ideas.
28th Sep: Today I did some research into rap parody videos
and found a few on YouTube. I watched them and thought how each parody mocked
different things, some mocked lyrics, costumes and even appearance of group
members. Issak worked on doing a steal-o-matic which works as a moving, visual
mood board to present our inspiration. James kept researching website and CD
covers from similar genres.
29th Sep: Today Issak carried on with the steal-o-matic as a
lot of detail needs to be put in for this. James continued to do some more
research for our website and digipak. Today I wrote a letter of permission to
our Artists record label requesting permission to use their song to create a
music video to. I have sent this off in the post to await a reply.
30th Sep: Today I did some font research as to which font we
want to have in order to feature on all of our merchandising, website and album
covers. Issak continued to work on the steal-o-matic and also continued with
the annotated timeline of lyrics.
1st Oct: Today I wrote a prop and location list so that we
know what props we need when we start to film. Issak finished the
steal-o-matic.
2nd Oct: Today we were unable to progress with our group
planning as we had a workshop with Pete Fraser and Jake Wynne which we all
attended.
5th Oct: Today we blogged about our Pete Fraser and Jake
Wynne workshop. We reflected on what we had learnt.
6th Oct: Today I did a shooting schedule to decide when we
could film our first shoot and what we would film. Issak and James decided to
do a photoshoot for Issak so that we could experiment with some album/ website
photos. Issak then edited some potential photos for the digipak.
7th Oct: Today James wasn't here so Issak and I decided to
do some more work on the timeline of annotated lyrics. I also did a risk
assessment for shooting and emailed the council for permission to film in
Chelmsford Crematorium.
9th Oct: Today I started the storyboard and decided on some
of the shot types for our music video. I tried to vary the shot types so that
they would be interesting and keep the audience captivated. Issak used some
different effects on photo shop and edited the album cover for our digipak with
input from myself and James as to which fonts, colours, styles and positioning
on the cover.
12th Oct: Today, I carried on creating our storyboard so
that we knew exactly what we needed to film and to which lyric they fit with.
James did some digipak research as to what other rap artists look like and what
to include on it. Issak came up with a name for himself and quickly drew up
some examples on photoshop to show the rest of our group and to get some quick
feedback.
13th Oct: Today I did some extra website research as I was
still a little unsure of how our website should look and the layout of it.
James looked at different videos and found some inspiration as to what ideas we
could include in our video. This then helped Issak to continue completing some
ideas onto our annotated lyrics post.
15th Oct: Today I filled out a shooting schedule so that we
could organise our shooting and make sure that we knew what we wanted to shoot
and when we wanted to shoot.
16th Oct: Today we started to film some of the green screen
shots as we decided this would be easy to film first so that we had some
footage to play around. We then decided to film outside so that we could get
some long shots of Issak as we found this challenging in the green screen room.
We shot a few shots for several lines of the first verse.
19th Oct: Today we sat as a group and brainstormed ideas
that we could include into our timeline of annotated lyrics for verse 2.
20th Oct: Today we filmed a few more lines of our music
video. The locations we filmed in were the crematorium and near to a block of
flats. We wanted to film with 2 cameras so that we could get some different
angles of one shot but as James couldn't make the shoot, we were unable to do
this.
21st Oct: Issak continued to edit today whilst James and I
did some more planning for our music video. James continued to work on the
website and tried to experiment with different layouts and contents. Today, I
updated our production diary as we were a few days behind and then I carried on
updating the storyboard as we had added to the annotated lyrics.
23rd Oct: Today Issak and I filmed all morning as James was
absent. We went back to he block of flats to re-shoot some of our previous
shots as the footage wasn't good enough to put into our video. Once we got back
we uploaded the footage and Issak started to edit some of this footage. We all
filled out a questionnaire based around the level of input and general
evaluation of each team member. We then went to a different location to film on
some stairs as we thought we could get some different angles to the shots here.
2nd Nov: Today we had a class meeting and discussed the
website research that we needed to do in order to make our website match
similar websites within this genre.
3rd Nov: Today, Issak continued to edit some of the footage
we have previously shot. James added to our halfway evaluation presentation as
he wanted to add some more information and explanation to it. I reflected on
some of our filming shoots so far so that we could learn from our mistakes and
in order to help us save time when filming.
4th Nov: Today, none of my group were in the lesson due to
other commitments, so I watched the other group present their halfway
evaluation and gave them some feedback on their digipak, website and their
music video concept idea.
5th Nov: Today we had a brief meeting and decided not to do
any filming so that we could each individually catch up with any bits of
paperwork that we needed to finish or add to. Issak carried on editing the
footage we had already shot.
6th Nov: Today we presented our halfway evaluation to the
group, we received some feedback on this and will continue to look into this
and improve based on the feedback.
9th Nov: Today we filmed Issak at some different locations
so that we had some more footage to edit. We tried to use a variety of urban
locations to use similar locations to the stereotypical rap genre videos.
10th Nov: Today, Issak wasn't here, so James and I decided
to make sure all our work was up to date and we planned for everything else we
needed to get done and by which deadlines they needed to be finished by. James
also continued to work on the website and I did some more research.
11th Nov: Today, Issak wasn't here again so James and I were
unable to film so we carried on with paperwork tasks.
13th Nov: Today, Issak wasn't here so I filmed another time
lapse of the sky so that we could add that to our music video. James added some
more to the website and I did some further research to support our digipak.
15th Nov: Today, we filmed for a large proportion of our
music video. We had 2 cameras and managed to capture lots of different shots.
16th Nov: Today, James carried on with the website. we uploaded our footage onto the computer so that Issak could start editing.
17th Nov: Today I updated the shooting schedule so that we can keep track of when and what we've filmed. James carried on with the website and Issak continued editing.
18th Nov: Today, Issak continued to edit. James did some sketches as what he wanted the final website to look like and I looked at some previous student videos which achieved high marks for some inspiration and I also tried to give them a mark, picking out what worked well and what didn't.
19th Nov: Today, Issak carried on editing whilst James continued to update the website. I filmed the storyboard and explained the shots and what would happen in each shot. I edited it and uploaded it to the blog.
23rd Nov: Today, Issak created the tour poster on photoshop so that we could include it on our website which James continued to work on. I did some research on some magazine articles of rap artists for some inspiration as to what we could use and include on ours, including the layout.
24th Nov: Today, James added products on the website to our store so that its available for our fans to select items branded by iSO. Issak edited some more of our footage and I edited the storyboard on premier as well as planning the interview to film.
25th Nov: Today, we filmed Issak for the interview and then we uploaded the footage and Issak edited it together.
27th Nov: Today, Issak wasn't in so James finalised the last details for the website and I finished the magazine article.
1st Dec: Today, we watched each others first draft of our music videos and gave constructive feedback as to what they could do to make it better and what did or didn't go well.
2nd Dec: Today, I looked at everyone's websites and gave feedback on what I thought was good and what could have been better.
3rd Dec: Today, I looked at everyone's digipaks and gave them feedback as group as to what went well and even better if.
4th Dec: Today, we looked at our video feedback and decided which shots within our music video that we should re-shoot and which shots worked well.
7th Dec: Today, I edited the rest of the storyboard together so that we could export it and upload it to our blogs. James looked at the feedback we got from the website and changed parts of it to make the website better from this feedback. Issak finished adding some extra details on to the digipak after looking at the feedback.
8th Dec: Today, I decided what we could add to the website and the digipak based on the feedback as neither James nor Issak was in the lesson.
9th Dec: Today, I went through my blog with my teacher to decide on posts that I need to add in order to support my research. Issak continued to edit the digipak as the deadline is today.
My Song Choices
Today we were given fifteen minutes to finalize our song suggestions and
we then presented them to our group. Below are the songs that I suggested we
should make a music video for:
#1 Children Of The Wild - Steve Angello:
I think this song would be perfect to make a hybrid of performance and
narrative music video for. The whole concept of the video could be based around
'Children Of The Wild'. With children in an urban setting either running or
traveling to match the tempo of the song.
#2 On Top - Flume feat. T-Shirt
This could be accompanied by a music video that is simply an
extension of the lyrics. So it would be a narrative charting a characters
journey through fame starting being completely unknown to being 'on top'. This
idea would require a lot of investment into a character (star) as the star
would be the pivot for the whole music video.
#3 Crackazat - Eye Light
This song would be suited
to a concept video with lots of exotic obscure shots. The shots would have to
be edited exceptionally well to maintain people's interest in the music video.
But the tempo of the song offers lots of chance for interesting shots. Types Of Music Videos
Example - Whisky Story:
This video is a perfect example of a performance music video as:
- It is pop music which generally are all accompanied by performance music
- There are many shots and close ups of the artist performing which reinforces star image
- The artist is in an unusual place (The Tube and Kings Cross) to draw attention
Jamie XX - Loud Places (ft Romy):
This music video is a concept music video because:
- The imagery is made to match the beat
- There are many different shots all of which contribute nothing in terms of narrative
- There is obscure imagery which matches the mood of the song e.g. the skateboarder
Disclosure - Jaded:
This music video is an interesting narrative music video as it is part of a series of music videos which all tell one story from music video director Ryan Hope. This is the third installment in a television series-like way of releasing music videos. It conforms to the usual narrative type music video as it:
- Is very fast paced with lots of shots crammed in to tell the story in a quick time
- It mimics both horror and drama film genres as it's set in a dystopian society
- Both of the artists are part of the strory
Group Video Pitches
Libby's suggestions:
Ultraviolet - The Stiff Dylans:
Libby thought as this song is a pop song it would be easy to create a narrative for. She thought that it should be set at scenic locations like beaches, piers etc.
All Time Low - Kids In The Dark:
Libby liked this song as they are a band it would enable everyone to join in the performance. She thought the video should be narrative based and set in somewhere like a dark forest.
Issak's suggestions:
Logic - Buried Alive:
Issak thought this song would be great as the lyrics are very descriptive which would suit a narrative video. He also thought the instrumental would allow us to incorporate great camera shots.

Learning Reflection
Today in class we talked about representation in media, but more specifically in music videos. The main topic of discussion was how women are represented in music videos. With controversial artist such as Miley Cyrus trying to create a reaction by creating exhibitionist music videos such as 'Wrecking Ball', see below:
My theory is that now music videos contribute to chart positions record labels put a great deal of pressure on female artists to be controversial in music videos to get views and push their songs up the charts. However not all female artist bow to this pressure with female artists like Taylor Swift being portrayed powerfully in her music videos like Bad Blood:
Cross Media
In class today we looked at the consistency across band products in preparation for creating our music video. We were shown how important it is to maintain an almost brand like image across all of our products. A perfect example of the consistency across brand products is Disclosure's products:
| Disclosure's official website |
Dislcosure's website has a minimalist layout. With six large images in the centre of the site each of these reinforce their branding the first image featuring one of their advertising billboard and the other being their album cover. The images are different every time the site is reloaded which makes it more interesting to fans. Links to their store, videos, blog and music are available at the top of the site. And both their Twitter and Spotify links are displayed in the corner.
| Artwork for their single featuring Gregory Porter |
With every single Disclosure release they edit what has become known as "#DisclosureFace" on to the artist the single features. This is clever as there is a constant 'brand-like' image for the band. When designing the media pack for our artist we need to maintain a constant image so it is easily recognisable.
Music video for 'Holding On' by Disclosure
While the music video is a narrative video with no performance certain things are added to maintain consistency with their image. For example purple can be seen in the video many times this is to link with the artwork.
Class Presentation and Feedback
Today in class I presented my song choice to our group, Steve Angello - Children Of The Wild. I think track would be perfect for us to create a music video for as it is fast and has a drop which could use many different interesting cuts. My idea for the music video is that we have shots of children running through urban location which builds to one editing effect with lots of cuts in time with the drop.
Audience Research
As part of our research before we make our music video we need to know how our target audience consume music and how they feel about music videos. In order to do this I thought about all of the things I would like to know about our target audience and wrote them down as questions. I then added the questions to a survey on SurveyMonkey and sent the link to my whole year group. Out off 88 people 21 of them answered my survey.
With SurveyMokey's useful analyse feature you can see a breakdown of the answers to all of the questions. The feedback I got will be extremely useful when we start to design our music video.
60% of my respondents said they preferred performance based music videos rather than story lines. This is good from my perspective as my idea is a performance based video however 40% is still a large amount so a hybrid of performance and a story could be the best idea. As it would not be good to isolate 40% of our target audience.
A resounding 80%of my respondents said that YouTube was their favourite platform to watch music videos on. With lots of devices like tablets and phones being used so commonly this is not surprising. As YouTube is the most popular way to watch music videos on it is very important the music video grabs attention from the first second. As with YouTube the user is in complete control so if the video is not eye catching the user can see a more appealing video come up as a suggested video and ignore ours.

Evaluation of Prelim Task
Who did you work with and how did you manage the task between you?
My original group was me, Nathan and Tom and we were given a Glee video to create. However neither of them got back in to Sixth Form so we could not complete the preliminary task. After summer me and Issak, who was in a similar situation to me, started looking at videos we would be able to do. Who did you work with and how did you manage the task between you?
How did you plan your sequence? What process did you use?
As we started our preliminary task for a second time after summer holidays we had very little time to plan the sequence. Once we found the video for 'Can't feel my face' by The Weeknd we printed out the lyrics and set up a microphone and camera in front of our green screen. Obviously this was not ideal as we didn't have much time to consider the props of create a storyboard.
What theories could you apply to the video you chose?
Music videos are an extension of the lyrics - Andrew Goodwin
What technology did you use to complete your task and how did you use it?
We used a variety of technologies to complete our task, such as:
What factors did you take into account when planning, shooting and editing?
As our production was rushed we did not take enough factors into account. An example of this is after we had filmed we saw all of the clips had a shadow on the green screen. After shooting we researched this and it became obvious to us from YouTube videos that this was a common mistake and was easily preventable had we of researched it beforehand. This did not ruin the video as Issak was able to edit so the shadow was not clearly visible.

- Sony Camcorder

- Desktop PC
- YouTube tutorials

This did not ruin the video as Issak was able to edit so the shadow was not clearly visible.
Aside from this the shooting and editing went smoothly as we had lots of experience doing it from AS. There were some advanced editing skills which we needed to research but once we had done this they worked exactly as we wanted.
How successful is your music video? What did others say about your video?
The music video is successful in the respect that we replicated the official video well. The lip syncing was a good standard but in our final music video we need to allocate much more time to editing so the lip syncing is perfect. Considering how quickly we did the music video I think the end result was okay but what was much more valuable was what we learned from the experience.
What have you learned whilst filming?
The most valuable thing I learned is that every decision is important and should be thought about and researched before doing it to prevent mistakes. Doing things instinctively can work sometimes for example trying a different camera shot but generally less mistakes are made when everything is planned. I also learnt various advanced editing techniques which I had no idea about last year, I leaned these mainly from YouTube but also group members.
How does it compare with filming an opening to a film?

How does it compare with filming an opening to a film?
From my experience creating a film opening the actual act of filming was much more important. Finding great camera shots was slightly more important than editing. Whereas with the music video the editing is by far the most important as regardless of how good the shots are if the editing isn't immaculate and the lip syncing perfect the video will look very poor. So I think when we start making our music video I would prioritise editing over shooting, not by much, but it's important to have time to edit the video to our best ability.
What are your strengths and weaknesses as a group model?
Before the preliminary task editing was by far my biggest weakness as last year I was too happy to let more talented people edit rather than be hands on and get better at it. I feel I have improved on this and have learned some new techniques. But the editing task we do next week will be very important for me to try and improve on this.
Looking at other groups videos which do you think were most successful and why?
I think Archie's groups was quite successful as they chose a hard video to replicate but did it quite well.

Prelim Task Changes
As the two other members of my group did not get back into sixth form I can no longer complete our allocated preliminary task. Instead of doing Glee I will pair up with someone else to start a new preliminary task with so when I do my real music video I will already of had experience filming and editing.

Genre Research (Hip-Hop)
As it has been established within my group, it's clear that the hip-hop genre we have to create a music video for. There are not many well established white hip-hop artists in the industry at the moment in comparison to black hip-hop artists, however, notable Caucasian artists include: Eminem, Mac Miller, G-Eazy, Logic (our song's artist), Yelawolf, Action Bronson and Macklemore.
Below is Eminem performing "The Real Slim Shady" live while on tour in 2000. The kind of people you see at tours are typically the artist's primary audience.
